Top Tips for Dirt Bike Transport and Security

In this article, we’ve listed items that you need to invest in to make sure that your dirt bike is safe and secure when you are:

  • Traveling with your dirt bike to/from the track
  • Out trail riding
  • Going for a multi-day adventure ride
  • Or when you’re transporting your bike around town

Vehicle

When transporting your dirt bike, you have three options. Deciding which one to buy depends mostly on your budget.

Trailer

An enclosed trailer is the most secure option, but also the most expensive. There are many cheaper options out there, from the standard boxed type to trailers specifically designed for dirt bikes.

If you’re a professional rider or racer,  this is a long-term career investment. And it’s totally worth it. It makes hauling your dirt bike to and from tracks much easier and makes sure they’re secure throughout the transport.

Van/ute

This is often the go-to transport vehicle for racers and regular riders. The van is more secure, as it’s enclosed, compared to a ute. You can fit two or sometimes 3 bikes inside, amongst your gear and accessories.

Bike carrier

If a van or trailer doesn’t fit in your current budget, then you can use a bike carrier instead. You can easily mount it on your vehicle or remove it when not in use. The only downside of this option is that it doesn’t offer the same security as having your dirt bike enclosed.

Loading Ramp

Sure, you and your mate can lift your dirt bike onto your vehicle–but how long before you get tired of having to do that all the time? Besides, after riding for hours, you might not have the energy for it. A loading ramp makes it easier and faster and just makes sense.

Security Systems

Tie-Down Straps and Wheel Chocks

There are two types of security that you need to think about. One has to do with theft prevention, and the other with damage prevention when transporting the bike. That means keeping your dirt bike in place, not falling to the side or worse, coming off your trailer or ute causing major damage.

To keep it secure you’ll need some decent tie-down straps and a tie-down strut. Quality tie-downs can last years, so make sure you invest in a good set. You wouldn’t want cheap, substandard tie-downs holding your bike in place—you’d worry about them snapping and your dirt bike paying the price.

The wheel chocks are also needed for when you’re using a trailer or van to transport your bike. They keep your front wheels from moving and help your tie-downs and bike remain snug. Without a strut and wheel check, the front wheel can move, and the tension on the tie-downs changes which will result in disaster.

Lock-N-Load Moto Transport System

If you’d rather not buy those items individually, then an all-in-one locking system might be more suitable. You won’t even need floor anchors. The Lock-N-Load Moto Transport System holds your dirt bike securely throughout transport, removing pressure on the fork seals.

Locks

For the other type of security, theft prevention, you absolutely have to buy a lock. There are many options to choose from, such as alarmed disc locks and chain locks. Alarmed locks can detect movement and will let out a siren if someone tries to tamper with your dirt bikes, and good-quality chain locks can resist bolt cutters. These locks are usually light enough to carry wherever you go.

MoniMoto 7 GPS Motorcycle Security Tracker

You might also want to invest in a MoniMoto GPS motorcycle security tracker. The alarm automatically powers on when the key fob leaves the bike, ready to track movement. If a theft attempt is detected, this tracker can call your phone within one minute. Plus, it lets you track the bike through the in-app.

Bags

When bringing your dirt bike to the tracks or going on long adventure rides, you’re going to need bags to secure your gear, tools, and other items too. That’s why we’ve included bags in this list. Those other items are just as important and should be well taken care of.

Saddlebag

Do you ride dual-sport or enduro bikes? Looking for a bag that can fit all your gear on multi-day rides? Saddlebags offer just that, without disrupting your riding. They fit snugly on your bike, even through rough roads, technical sections, and steep climbs.

Panniers

Do you prefer panniers? We have varying sizes that will suit any ride, from entry-level waterproof panniers to serious long-haul adventure ride bags. If you like adventure tours, both saddlebags and panniers are good investments, as they can carry everything you need for the trip.

Gear Bags

If you’re an MX or Enduro rider, then you might be more interested in the more traditional gear bag. A duffel bag that can carry your gear, accessories, and tools might be enough, and those bags come at more affordable prices. A wheelie gear bag is also a great option as it can double up as a travel bag when you next head interstate or overseas.
