Best Dirt Bike Storage Options
We have to admit that motorcycles can unfortunately be easy to steal, even with chain locks and alarmed locks. We’re not telling you to ditch the locks you have got. Keep them, but perhaps add more security measures: like alarms, ground anchors and a secure enclosed space. Not only does that add extra protection against would be thieves, but also against the harsh elements outside as well.
Garage
This is the best place to store your bike, as long as you have ample space. If you have to push the bike to a corner when parking your car or move it around to get to your tools, then that might turn out to be too tedious.
Your dirt bike should have its own special space, where it won’t be accidentally bumped into. It is, after all, your pride and joy.
If you don’t have a motorcycle stand, you’ll have to buy one soon. The milk crate will eventually end in disaster. A good stand is the best way to store the bike, sturdy & upright and without putting stress on the tyres.
Motorcycle Shed
No space in the garage? Don’t push it. There are other options.
If you have land, you can dedicate a shed for your dirt bike. Along with your motorcycle, you can store your helmet, gear, tool kit, spare parts, oils, fuel cans, and other items in the shed, within easy reach. The ideal shed should be big enough for dirt bike maintenance too.
You can DIY or buy ready-made sheds that you simply have to assemble. If you’re doing it yourself, here are a few pointers:
- Don’t skimp on quality. This is your pride and joy, and it deserves a home that won’t be swept away by storms or suddenly crumble down.
- Make sure you get the measurements right. Manoeuvring your dirt bike through a tight space or performing routine maintenance in a cramped room can be frustrating in the long run.
- Take note of adequate ventilation. The shed is there to protect your dirt bike from theft and harsh elements. Poor ventilation can cause rust, corrosion, and other damages.
Motorcycle Tent
This is popular among some riders as it’s the more affordable and practical option. While it’s not enough against strong winds, it’s good enough as a temporary fix in mild weather. It protects your bike from the rain and harsh sunlight and works as a good storage solution compared to having none at all. However, it is not a very good option if you are looking for security.
Motorcycle Cover
While this is probably the most affordable storage option, don’t go for the cheapest motorcycle cover. The good ones come in heavy-duty material that is UV rated, have a fleecy inner lining so as not to scratch your bike, are waterproof and often also provides breathability. Some covers also provide locking straps and/or alarms. Those don’t offer the same protection as the garage or shed, but can help deter a thief.
Rental Unit
Another option is to rent a storage unit. The disadvantage, obviously, is that it’s not at home and there will be an extra cost. It can offer theft security and protection from extreme weather, but going to and from the storage unit whenever you want a ride might be discouraging.
If none of the above is an option for you, you may need to ask a mate or someone in your family if you can store it in their garage. Either that, or you could ask your other half if the dirt bike can live in the lounge room. Good luck with that one.
